WHAT TIPS AND ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS?
—Figure out what your passion is and work HARD for it and go 500% for it. Work HARD and put your heart into it and don't give up. I think the industry can often be discouraging and cruel and it's super competitive. But you have to just focus on your passion and work hard, support others, believe in yourself and others who help you. Just focus on doing the best work you can; work on getting the real heartfelt shots that are unique from others' work; find the "magic." Work with different models, different fashion styles, different locations until you figure out what really clicks for you and what works best. It's a process and a total evolution. I'm still figuring that all out and refining my work and styles! I think it's even more challenging for womens' fashion...especially as we get older, we mature, our styles and preferences/aesthetics change...we adapt our wardrobe; but we photographers have to do that as well to evolve.
WHAT TIPS AND ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO GIRLS WHO WANT TO GET INTO MODELLING?
Work REALLY REALLY hard and don't give up. It's super competitive. Just be real and honest and project with your heart; showcase your individuality. If you have a good range and a great attitude and are relentless, hard-working—you'll get discovered if you are authentic and yourself.
WHAT ARE 3 THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT:
Apart from my phone (haha! my #1 work tool as a freelancer)—I'd say:
1 - My bikinis and vintage clothing collection. (I wear vintage every single day and a bikini every possible day I can get away with it!) My ultimate go-to outfit is my totally shredded vintage Levis and bikini top. I will avoid wearing a shirt and shoes anytime I possibly can. (It's honestly, amazing I survived working inside an office as long as I did.)
2 - My truck. I love traveling and taking long random road trips and just getting off the grid. Even if it's to sneak away to surf for the afternoon or taking a little spontaneous drive just to clear my head and listen to music, driving the coast road...that's my jam. It's also a crucial work tool for me.
3 - My skateboard. Typically I'd say surfboards, but, I was so tied up working in an office this last year—sadly I rarely had time to surf. I am not sure I could have made it through without my skateboard stashed in my desk drawer. That was like my escape pod during breaks on really crazy hectic work days in the city! It's my salvation...especially if I am stuck somewhere I can't drive my truck. I'm a total tomboy at heart: I have to have skateboards in my life.
PS. they are also GREAT doubles as camera dollies on photo shoots if you need to get motion shots.
IF YOU COULD PICK ONE O&O BIKINI WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE?
I'm such a fan of black...always have, always be a bit more rock n' roll than boho. I absolutely adore the GOLD RUSH print and my favorite style is the Tri Bikini for sure! It's super comfy and I love the functional and sporty aspect of the design.
